2024 PARC NL Workshops and Readings

Oct 25, 2024

In this second session, which will take place on October 26 at the SPACE, we will showcase two plays, which were selected in partnership with PARC Company Member Shakespeare the Sea NL. Up first is “Ampiano Meets Shakespeare” by Nicole Obiodiaka & Pinky Rido, with dramaturgy by PARC AD Santiago Guzmán, assistant dramaturgy by Lydia Makaga.
SYNOPSIS
In a dance studio, Amari, a modern dancer, is interrupted by Shakespeare, who claims the space is double-booked. They engage in a heated debate about the nature of poetry—Amari expresses her cultural heritage through dance, while Shakespeare insists that true poetry lies in spoken verse. Despite their differences, Shakespeare becomes captivated by Amari’s performance and tries to get closer to her. Amari, both drawn to and frustrated by his advances, challenges the deeper meaning of art, creating a tension-filled encounter that sparks curiosity between them.
This evening of readings will conclude with PARC Member Brianna Russell’s new play “Icarus is Falling”, with dramaturgy by Keshia Palm.
SYNOPSIS
The young Icarus has resigned himself to a life of monotony imprisoned inside the Labyrinth, forever overshadowed by the genius of his aging father, Daedalus. However, his world is thrown into disarray when Helios, the ancient sun god, appears on the roof, promising Icarus the two things he desires most- adoration and immortality. Icarus is Falling delves into the intricate relationships between brilliant fathers, arrogant sons, and the power of their gods through an imagined retelling of the infamous Greek myth of youthful pride.
