PARC Opens Submissions for 2024 Student Monologue Contest

Oct 29, 2024

Open to all high school and undergraduate students from (or currently studying in) Atlantic Canada (NB, NS, PEI, NL), The PARC 2024 Student Monologue Contest is an opportunity to flex your creative muscles and share your voice with the world. Submissions must be themed around fall / autumn in some way – cold weather, autumn colours, holiday seasons, transitioning into new things, or even a chill down your neck. Winning playwrights will receive an annual student membership to PARC (including resources such as the weekly E-Bulletin and Home delivery services) and have their work featured on PARC’s website and social media.

There is no fee to apply for this competition.

Contest rules

Applications MUST follow the following formatting and content guidelines:

  • Minimum 100 words / maximum one page.
  • 12 pt. font (suggested line spacing 1.5.)
  • Monologue submissions in PDF format
  • Monologues must feature one continuous speaker, in any theatrical style: a memory piece, a one-sided conversation, stream-of-consciousness, a ramble, etc. A single person should be able to speak and perform the piece.
  • Submissions must explicitly or thematically include a feature of fall: a symbolic connection to the season, a character playing in the leaves or engaging in spooky activities, a reflection on holiday traditions, even the feeling of being in-between – have fun!

Applications for the competition close Tuesday, November 12 at 11:59 PM ADT – submissions after this time will not be accepted.

Shortlisted monologues will be announced on November 19, 2024 and posted to PARC’s website. The winning piece will be announced on November 26 – and the winning playwright is invited to join PARC student intern Maika Branch in a video interview accompanying a virtual performance of the piece on PARC’s website and social media.

The winning playwright will also be awarded an annual student membership to PARC, including resources such as the E-Bulletin weekly newsletter, professional support for developing playwrights, and more: visit https://playwrightsatlantic.ca/ to learn more.
