Changes to the Canadian Copyright Act (National)

A Canadian Copyright Act amendment came into effect on December 30, 2022, which extends the term of copyright protection in literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works from 50 years to 70 years after the end of the year of the author’s passing.  The term extension will not be retroactive, so any works whose copyright expired on or before December 31, 2021, will remain in the public domain.

Member Consultations on the Manifesto of Goodness – PACT (National)

The Manifesto of Goodness, devised by two working groups of PACT board members, staff, and members at large, is our commitment to engaging in good practices in the creation and sharing of theatre. This new document is meant to serve as a touchstone for PACT and its members to measure our actions and impacts against our values, to foster greater accountability, and to help build a better theatre sector.

The manifesto has reached its second draft and has been reviewed by PACT board and staff. We’re now looking for feedback from the membership to ensure that the document expresses our shared values in a clear and meaningful way.

This series of consultations are open to PACT Members and Colleagues and will take place by region, with an extra session for those who can’t attend at their designated time.

Digital Dramaturgy Initiative Website (Digital)

MAP partnered with Playwrights’ Workshop Montréal, Playwrights Theatre Centre, and Blyth Festival to undertake the Digital Dramaturgy Initiative (DDI), designed around the expansion of digital literacy for those who work in the field of new play development in Canada.  The DDI culminated in three residencies (Montréal April 2021, Winnipeg June 2021, and Vancouver September 2021).  Across all of its stages, knowledge sharing was one of the throughlines of the project, and in this spirit we are very pleased to share the DDI website, intended as an educational resource and archive. PGC Call for Cultural Consultant Recommendations

The Playwrights Guild of Canada is collecting recommendations for cultural consultants in order to create a resource for their members.  Cultural consultants can help playwrights when they are creating new work that involves characters or story elements that are outside of their lived experiences.  If you would like to recommend someone, or bring yourself forward for consideration, you can find the recommender’s form on the PGC website.  Any information shared will remain confidential until the individuals recommended have provided permission to be included on the PGC list.
